DB Schenker Logistics gives starting signal for major project in Leipzig

DB Schenker’s logistics centre in Leipzig to supply BMW plants in China and South Africa with automotive components from autumn 2011:

DB Schenker Logistics celebrated the progress of the construction works of a new logistics centre in northern Leipzig on 13 July 2011. The event was also the starting signal for one of the biggest projects in the company’s history. From autumn 2011 the BMW plants in Shenyang (China) and Rosslyn (South Africa) will be supplied with more than 8,000 components from Leipzig. Every day 50 Sea freight containers shall leave the logistics centre. “We assume great responsibility as the supply of the production is an important part of the value adding chain of our customers", explains Dr. Michael A. Kluger, CEO contract logistics/SCM of Schenker Deutschland AG.

To supply BMW’s the production belts reliably and exactly with components, Schenker Deutschland AG has been investing into the expansion of its capacities at the site in Leipzig. About 600 new jobs will be created. After the construction works are finished around 63,000 m² additional logistics space will be available in northern Leipzig. The automotive specialists at the new logistics centre will receive around 2,500 cubic meters of vehicle components on behalf of their customers.

"In Leipzig we are handling a typical CKD project ", says Jean Matousek, Manager Business Development Automotive Schenker Deutschland AG, about the logistic challenge. Almost complete vehicles of the series BMW X1 and BMW 3er will be transported "Completely Knocked Down" (CKD) – to the production sites abroad, where they are assembled. DB Schenker takes over the components from the BMW suppliers as well as the nearby Leipzig BMW plant. The logistician prepares them for transportation, picks the shipments and organises secure packaging as well as professional conservation of the components susceptible to corrosion.
