Deutsche Bahn saves costs

DB Schenker Rail and DB Schenker Logistics record decline in results

As a response to the global economic and financial crisis the Management of Deutschen Bahn AG takes measures to improve the situation concerning costs and competition. They are not taking staff reductions into consideration for the time being. However the enterprise will seize opportunities to reduce overhead costs, improve purchase conditions and rise efficiency in all divisions, as Hartmut Mehdorn, Chief Executive Officer, said on the occasion of the presentation of the balance sheet 2008. Wherever there is an opportunity the enterprise intends to capitalise on the competitors’ deficiencies.

In 2008 turnover of the Deutschen Bahn AG rose 6.8 per cent to EUR 33.5 billion in spite of declines in rail cargo traffic due to market conditions. The adjusted operative result amounted to EUR 2.5 billion (+ 4.8%). In 2008 DB Mobility Logistics AG, the parent company for all transport and logistics activities, achieved a turnover of EUR 32.7 billion (+ 5.6%) and an adjusted operative result of EUR 2 billion (+ 5.4%).

In the reporting period DB Schenker Logistics achieved a turnover of EUR 14.68 billion (+ 4.7%) and an adjusted EBIT of EUR 381 million (minus 9.5%). The enterprise feels the impact of the economic crisis, but recorded a 4%-increase in consignments forwarded in European land transport in 2008. The contract logistics division achieved also a 4%-increase in revenue. The seafreight division recorded a constant level of forwarded volumes (in TEU). Tonnage handled as air cargo declined by 3 per cent compared to 2007.

DB Schenker Rail presented a balance sheet, showing a turnover of EUR 4.6 billion (+ 19.2%) and an adjusted EBIT of EUR 307 million (minus 14%). Volume transported in rail traffic rose 21.1 per cent to 378.7 million tons. At the same time traffic performance rose 15 per cent to 14.8 billion ton kilometres. The only bad news is: Excluding the British cargo rail company EWS, which had been acquired at the end of 2007, DB Schenker Rail would have failed last year’s high figures.
