DHL transports 60 cubic metres of musical instruments of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig during the Asia and Europe tour

DHL will once again be in charge of the safe and smooth transportation of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s more than 100 musical instruments during the orchestra’s concert tours to Asia and across Europe in 2011. The cargo is worth several million Euros, consists of sensitive and unique instruments. As the official logistics partner of the Gewandhaus Orchestra DHL uses also air-suspended vehicles and temperature-monitoring systems. The world’s largest professional orchestra will give guest performances in Asia from 4 to 21 March and in various European cities from September to December.

The total cargo weight is 6,000 kilogrrams with a volume of approximately 60 cubic metres. Apart from 500 gram triangles to kettledrums weighing 133 kilograms, DHL also transports music stands, sheet music, the conductor’s rostrum and the musicians‘ wardrobes. It is guaranteed that the temperature level is continuously controlled and documented during transport. The position of the transport vehicles is continuously monitored by GPS. The worldwide active transport and logistics service provider also takes care of all customs formalities along the way.

"To make every single concert a success, it is crucial to ensure safe transportation and meet the tight schedule. The planning of a complete concert tour starts up to one and a half years in advance of the opening concert," explains Wolfgang Giehl, Head of Corporate Brand Marketing, Deutsche Post DHL.
