DHL handles large-scale transport via Linz airport

DHL Global Forwarding carried more than 12 metres long steel sheets weighing up to 9.5 tonnes from Linz to Mumbai
DHL Global Forwarding, the air and sea freight expert within the Deutsche Post DHL group, has organised the air freight transportation of giant steel sheets from Linz to Mumbai on 17 June. The transport was handled using the Boeing 747-400F of Atlas Air – which is rarely seen in Austria – and has been chartered for this purpose only.

To be able to transport the more than 5 tonnes, sensitive steel sheets (each 12 metres long, 2.8 metres wide and 16 millimetres high) of a steel production company in Linz, 20 ft. pallets (metal sheets) had to be provided by truck from Brussels. The steel sheets were carried via oversized special transport to the Linz airport. Loading of the freight aircraft was carried out using a special chartered crane. In the course of this transport Global Forwarding organised pre-carriage, the charter flight and further transport to an industrial region in the catchment area of Bombay/ Mumbai.

“Organising this large-scale transport had been a challenge, as everything had been on short notice. Thanks to our exceptional relations with the Linz airport and the perfect cooperation conception and organisation of the combined road/air freight transport including the loading of the freight aircraft could be carried out within the shortest time possible“, Oliver Thunhart, Head of Airfreight Austria DHL Global Forwarding, outlines the project.

Dipl.-Ing. Gerhard Kunesch emphasised that this transport on short notice had been quite a challenge, but also a big sign of confidence in the Linz aircargocenter. “Our advantage is that we can offer our customers the highest flexibility. With this transport, I believe our aircargocenter has once again prooved that we earn the confidence placed in our organisation.“
