Donauhafen Krems: Significantly more vessel and rail transhipment

Despite Hungary and Bulgaria: 400 cargo vessels and 900,000 tonnes of cargo throughput in the Mierka Donauhafen Krems port in the first half of the year 2014

The Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems reports excellent figures for transhipment in the first six months of 2014. From January to June they loaded and unloaded 900,000 tonnes of goods. “This is a 48 per cent-increase year-on-year“, says Hubert Mierka, managing director Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH&Co KG, to the newspaper NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.

This growth is mainly a result of vessel transhipment, which has more than doubled from 200,000 to 460,000 tonnes. In the first six months of this year the port has seen many gravel transportations, Hubert Mierka adds. Thanks to the growing container business also rail transhipment grew in the port of Krems, by 20 per cent to 165,000 tonnes. Truck transhipment volume remained stable at 275,000 tonnes. 400 cargo vessels (2013: 210) have called the port of Krems during the first six months of this year.

The trimodal transhipment hub in Krems / Danube has still sufficient capacity and aims to handle more border crossing transports, which requires “reliable water depth for cargo vessels on the Danube“, Hubert Mierka emphasises. “Whereas the Austrian association for waterways viadonau is doing exemplary work, Hungary and Bulgaria are taking far too less action on their sections of the river,“ he adds.
