DP World introduces new train between London and Southampton facilities

Global logistics company DP World has launched a new intermodal train service connecting its container terminals in London and Southampton, with the aim of easing access between the two locations for its customers.

The service, operated by DP World, embarked on its maiden voyage on 26 November. It is scheduled to continue transporting cargo along this route every Saturday. The journey takes under five hours and the trains will carry cargo such as food produce, beverages, and consumer goods.

The company believes that this will be a more environmentally efficient alternative to road transport, claiming that ‘the train takes up to 120 lorries a week off the roads and cuts carbon emissions by up to 80%’.

DP World’s UK Commercial and Supply Chain Director John Trenchard said: “DP World is unique in offering customers a choice of deep-water entry and exit points to and from the UK. This new rail service will make it even easier for our customers to switch volumes quickly and easily between the two locations, which means greater flexibility and choice.”
