EEIG shows commitment for interoperable rail infrastructure

European Economic Interest Group develops continuous rail solutions

Aiming to sustainably improve rail cargo transport on the international corridor from Rotterdam via Mannheim and Basle to Geneva, the rail infrastructure enterprises („Eisenbahninfrastrukturunternehmen = EIG) ProRail, DB Netz, BLS Infrastruktur, SBB Infrastruktur and RFI founded a company according to European law in 2008, namely the "European Economic Interest Group Corridor Rotterdam – Genoa" (EEIG). On May 19, 2009, the five infrastructure enterprises signed a joint statement.

In this document, the EIUs bound themselves to have available a modern, effective and interoperable rail infrastructure, which meets the market requirements as well as the European Commission’s claim for sustainable growth on trans-European corridors. In order to fulfil these targets comprehensive measures to increase quality on the cargo transport corridor from Rotterdam to Geneva have been defined and implemented since the EEIG was founded.

One expample for the successful cooperation among the EIG is the concept of the so-called "One Stop Shop", which bundles demands according to international lines. Since the customer-oriented service was introduced, the average handling time for short-term line demands was reduced by 30 per cent to 6.4 work days.

Moreover a joint "Performance Management" was formed, which uses the IT technology "Europtirails" to provide real-time monitoring of trains on the corridor from Rotterdam to Geneva. So the system shows reliable information, which facilitates transborder disposition of railway enterprises and EIU. As "Europtirails" has already been introduced on the major part of the corridor, the service shall be available on the total route next year.
