Ethiopian Airlines establishes third African hub

Takeover of 49 per cent of the shares of Malawi Airlines is the next step of Ethiopian Airlines on their way to become the leading airline in Africa
 
Ethiopian Airlines becomes the strategic partner of Malawi Airlines. The shareholder agreement was signed between H.E. Dr. Cornelius Mwalwanda, Deputy Minister of Finance of the Government of the Republic of Malawi and Ato Tewolde Gebremariam, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian in Lilongwe on July 11, 2013. Ethiopian Airlines takes over the new Malawian Air with 49 per cent equity shareholding. The remaining 51 per cent of the shares will be held by the Malawian Government and Malawian private investors. Through this step Lilongwe will become Ethiopian’s third hub on the African continent after their main hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and in Lomé, West Africa.
 
As per its Vision 2025 multiple hubs strategy in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines aims to set up hubs in all regions of the “black continent” and to become the leading aviation group in Africa generating 10 billion USD in annual revenue by 2025. The new partnership with Malawi Airlines is a further step of Ethiopian Airlines to implement their ambitious plans.
 
Ethiopian Airlines, one of the biggest and fastest growing airlines in Africa, launched their first liner service in 1946, from Addis Abeba to Kairo. Today the airline serves 73 destinations around the globe. They operate a daily flight from Frankfurt to the hub in Addis Abeba and further to 45 destinations across Africa. The hub for airfreight liner services from and to Europe is located in Liege (Belgium). The freighter fleet of Ethiopian Airlines Cargo comprises six aircraft of the following types: Boeing 757F, Boeing 777F and MD-11F.
