Etihad Airways orders 199 jets and sets the course to Graz and Linz

Arabian airline Etihad Airways to serve Graz and Linz via Zurich from June 2014 and places biggest fleet order in the company’s history

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will launch daily nonstop-flights to Zurich from June 1, 2014. About Zurich are daily flights with the route network of the latest involvement of Etihad Airways, the Swiss Darwin Airline, connected. Darwin Airline is renamed Etihad Regional. Via Zurich the daily flights are connected with Etihad Airways’ latest holding, the Swiss Darwin Airline. Darwin Airline will be renamed to Etihad Regional.

Darwin Airline (Etihad Regional) will start flights from Zurich to eight new destinations: Leipzig, Geneva, Florence, Turin, Linz, Graz, Verona and Lyon. The airline operates already national flights linking Geneva and Lugano.

Subject to regulatory approvals Zurich will be the second Swiss destination after Geneva for Etihad Airways. On the new route from Abu Dhabi to the Swiss Confederation, an Airbus A330-300 in a three-class configuration is deployed.

On November 17 Etihad Airways placed its biggest fleet order for 199 aircraft and 294 engines with a value of USD 67 billion. This enables the airline to accelerate its growth in the next decade once again.

During the Dubai Air Show, the airline announced orders for 87 aircraft, type Airbus and 56 Boeing, as well as 56 more options and purchase rights. The new aircraft will be powered by 127 GE Aviation, 115 Rolls-Royce and 52 CFM-engines.

The order includes 25 next generation Boeing 777X, 30 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, a Boeing 777 cargo aircraft, 50 Airbus A350 XWB, 36 Airbus A320neo family aircraft and one Airbus A330-200F. Deliveries of the passenger aircraft will begin in 2018.

The airline currently has a fleet of 86 aircraft, with more than 80 jets on order. Its last major aircraft deal was made at the Farnborough Air Show in 2008, where Etihad Airways announced firm orders for 100 aircraft. The value of the 2008 and 2013 orders, including engines, tops US$ 110 billion at list prices.
