EUR 3.6 million-investment: GLS opens its second eco-depot in Austria

New depot of GLS Austria in Steinabrückl allows faster service for customers and recipients in Vienna’s 23rd district

Following a seven months-construction period GLS Austria has started operating its new building in Steinabrückl on Monday. The parcel and express service provider has invested about EUR 3.6 million into the site, which has a peak capacity of 15,000 daily parcels. “Lower Austria is an economically strong federal state. In the past years our parcel volume has been rising continuously“, says Klaus Schädle, managing director Europe South of GLS.

The new building has 53 loading bays. Seven of them are reserved for main leg trucks, and 46 for delivery vehicles. The open area of 4,400 m² provides additional space for sorting and shunting. With the expanded capacity in Steinabrückl GLS now serves Vienna’s 23rd district from the south. Travel time to Vienna-Liesing is cut by about one third. “We are closer to our customers and parcel recipients in this important industrial and living district“, says Klaus Schädle.

For GLS it has been an easy decision to stick to Steinabrückl as location and to construct the new building in only a few hundred metres distance within the old one: “Steinabrückl is ideally located when it comes to transport – directly at the A2 motorway. The economically friendly climate and out employees’ connection to this place have confirmed our decision“, says Klaus Schädle.

After Zirl, Steinabrückl is the second eco-depot of GLS Austria and the 14th one of the GLS group. Taking into respect ecologic aspects for the construction of new buildings is part of GLS’ sustainability initiative ThinkGreen. Recyclable steel and sandwich panels, an air heating pump as primary heating source and a particularly energy efficient light system distinguish the site in Steinabrückl.

By their own account GLS implement reliably, high-quality parcel services for 220,000 customers in Europe and offers additional express and logistics services. Through their own companies and partners the group covers 37 European countries and is connected throughout the world through contractual alliances. Their own network covers 37 central transhipment sites and 667 depots. About 14,000 employees and about 18,000 vehicles carried around 380 million parcels in the 2012/13 financial year, generating a turnover of EUR 1.84 billion.
