EVN and RCG: 10 years of environmentally friendly disposal logistics

EVN and Rail Cargo Group have transported about 125,000 full wagons on the railway in Lower Austria since 2004

EVN Abfallverwertung Niederösterreich GmbH has been treating Lower Austria’s household and bulk waste at the thermal waste utilisation plant at Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr, generating energy from garbage for 10 years. For the same long time garbage has been transported the best ecological way possible. Together with Rail Cargo Logistics – Environmental Services GmbH, a part of the Rail Cargo Group, and NÖ Beteiligungsgesellschaft für Abfallwirtschaft und Umweltschutz (BAWU) they developed a concept to transport the garbage on the railway.

Since the start of this cooperation about 125,000 full wagons, the major part of Lower Austria’s household waste, has been transported to and from the waste incineration plant of EVN in Dürnrohr. The transport on the railway has sustainably reduced general environmental pollution and particularly in the municipalities through which the transportations had been led.

DI Franz Mittermayer, head of the EVN environmental division explains: “Treating garbage in an environmentally friendly way must go hand in hand with an environmentally friendly logistics concept. Our railway concept replaces about 40,000 truck trips and reduces CO2 emissions by about 4,000 tonnes per year.“
