Exceptional special road transport in Austria

Giant excursion ship (165 tonnes) drives across Austria since yesterday evening – escorted by a total of eight support vehicles

An exceptional special transport crosses Austria’s roads these days: Coming grom the Lux-yard near Bonn in Germany, the passenger ship „Alpine Pearl“ is being transported approximately 650 kilometers via the local roads towards Carinthia since Monday. The passenger ship, which can accommodate 225 persons, and is the first hybrid electric passenger ship in Austria is to be used as a tourist attraction at the Weissensee lake.

The special transport started on 6 October at 8 pm. at the border crossing Suben in Upper Austria, and ends in Techendorf am Weissensee on Thursday. The route leads from Upper Austria (A8, A25) via the A1 motorway (Westautobahn) to the Vienna area (A21), then via the A2 motorway (Südautobahn) to Carinthia, in the dirstrict of Hermagor (B111, B87). „Other corridors as the Tauern or Phyrn axis are not available this time, due to the weight limits for highway bridges and construction site restrictions,“ explains Johann Fellner, industry spokesman of the domestic vehicle and transport escorts in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO). The passenger ship was at least 47 meters long, 6.8 meters wide and 4.5 meters high and weighs 165 tonnes.

Until the heavy ship transport arrives safely at its destination in Carinthia, many security measures have to be taken. The low-loader carrying the passenger ship is weighed with mobile weighing plates along the route. The weight load of 165 tonnes is spread over 15 axes. Thus, compliance with the maximum permissible road load is ensured.

The domestic road transport supervisory body carry out the professional escort of the „floating giant“. Eight support vehicles – including two vehicles with blue lights are flanking the special transport. The accompanying body must implement the following requirement: There must be only one vehicle on the bridge in order not to damage the bridge structures. Therefore the 35 tonnes-tractor is repeatedly disconnected. Then the ship travels at walking pace with its own drive across sensitive bridge objects.

In the motorway exit area numerous concrete barriers must be removed to allow passing. Smaller curve radii can be handled easier this way. To reduce the driving width axes are retracted. Thus the hull therefore protrudes higher, street lights must be raised.
