Expansion of the logistics park at the Danube port Linz

Danube port of Linz invests more than EUR 10 million in the year 2011 into the expansion and modernisation of its facilities

Substantial information was given at the balance sheet press conference of the port of Linz: Linz Service GmbH, a subsidiary of Linz AG, operates the Danube port of Linz, and will invest strongly into the expansion of the site. Large additional capacities will be created for the port as a logistics park: One third of the three port basins will be silted up, to create additional space for logistics facilities.

This is possible, as the port of Linz was designed in a much too big dimension when it was built in the mid-1930ies, compared to today’s dimensions. Also after the port is party silted up, the location will still offer enough capacity to handle about ten times the cargo volume that is currently handled there. For the logistics park expansion project a total investment sum of EUR 10 million is available for silting up these areas; half of it in the current year. Works will start by the end of April and shall be finished by the end of 2012.

Large amounts will also be invested into the deep freeze centre „Tiefkühlzentrum West“ and into the expansion of the container terminal. The latter named includes also the planned electrification of the side tracks on the port area. This will be done in coordination with ÖBB, who will electrify the shunting station. Following the expansion of the container terminal and its side tracks, block trains at a maximum length of 700 metres can be handled without any problems. Into the construction of a warehouse for dangerous goods and water-endangering substances, which was started in 2010, around EUR 1.2 million will be invested into 2011.

In the year 2010 more than 2.8 million tons of goods were handled at the port of Linz, which is a year-on-year increase of 8.6 per cent on 2009. The commercial port accounted for most of it with a 45 per cent increase, while the tank port posted a plus of 2.3 per cent. The container terminal posted a 16.3 per cent growth in volume to 183,605 TEU.
