Expansion of the port of Vienna enters the next stage

95 million euros to be invested before 2015 to consolidate Hafen Wien’s position as a logistics hub in Central Europe

The expansion and modernising program at the port of Vienna enters the next stage. Around EUR 95 million will be invested in cooperation with partners before 2015. The focus lies on projects such as flood protection at the Albern port including a port gate, land reclamation at the Freudenau port, improvement of traffic infrastructure on the port area, expansion of storage capacities and the expansion of Marina Wien.

“We aim to offer customers holistic solutions in an international context, meaning from and to Central and Eastern Europe, the big European freight ports as well as along the Danube to the Black Sea”, the managing directors Ing. Rudolf Mutz and Dr. Herbert Szirota announced at a press conference in Vienna.

After a difficult business year 2009, with a turnover at EUR 46 million, the interim result of 2010 shows an uptrend again, as Wien Holding managing director Komm.-Rat Peter Hanke announced. Container business with 145,000 handled units in the first half of 2010 was 10 per cent above last year’s figure. The car terminal showed a 12.3 per cent growth to more than 43,000 vehicles handled. Utilisation of the warehouses rose five per cent. And also cargo ships handled in the port, mainly transporting raw materials, are ascending: In comparison to 2009 a slight plus can be expected for the end of this year.
