Felbermayr completes major project at the Vienna A23 motorway

Multiple divisions of the Felbermayr group were working on the renovation and securing of the portal supporting walls of the Laaerberg Tunnel in Vienna

Specialists from the Felbermayr special heavy construction team worked on the renovation and securing of the four supporting walls of the entrance to the Laaerberg Tunnel in Vienna for about two months. Together with a partner company, about 10,000 metres of ground anchorage were installed in record time. The building site, which is situated on the A23, was completed at the beginning of March.

While the tasks of the specially trained employees of the Felbermayr special heavy construction team usually include exposed rock faces, embankments and difficult excavations, this job was securing the reinforced concrete supporting walls on the A23 in Vienna. This entailed considerable additional logistics and organisational work. “To prevent major traffic disturbances, we could only use our heavy machinery between 21:00 and 5:00 at night and until 9:00 at the latest on weekends. During the day, all the lanes had to be free for traffic”, says site manager, Stefan Sturm. To comply with the tight schedule, precisely coordinated work was required by employees from the three special heavy construction branches in Salzburg, Stams and Lienz as well as the transportation and lifting technology division.

Essentially, the work was to position a total of about 600 anchors to secure the four, 400-metre supporting walls of the entrance to the Laaerberg Tunnel, directly beneath the Altes Landgut roundabout, known as the Verteilerkreis Favoriten by locals. To push on quickly with the work, up to five drilling units were used simultaneously. “To achieve the defined anchorage points on the walls, which reached up to twelve metres in height, the drill platforms were raised using loading cranes”, explains Sturm. Up to ten articulated telescopic platforms and scissor lifts from Felbermayr’s Lanzendorf branch were used to ensure the workers had height access. To position the anchors, borings with lengths of 15, 16 and 18 metres were created.

The Felbermayr Holding GmbH with its headquarters in Wels, Austria, runs 78 locations in 18 European countries. 2,800 employees generated net turnover of EUR 502 million in 2013. The company has its focus on special and heavy transport, as well as mobile crane and working platform hire, civil construction and engineering.
