First call of a 14,000 TEU CSCL container vessel at Port of Hamburg

“CSCL Star“ of China Shipping Container Lines “catapults“ North German seaport of Hamburg into new dimensions

Last week an outstanding premiere took place at Port of Hamburg. On 23 February 2011 the “CSCL Star“ container vessel of the CSCL China Shipping Container Lines called at the North German Port in the frame of the Far East liner service “Asia-Europe Express-1/China-Europe-Mediterranean Service“ (AEX-1/CEM) for the first time. The carrier providing a slot capacity of 14,074 TEU is – as measured by container slot capacity – the biggest container vessel to be handled at Port of Hamburg. With a length of 366 metres and a width of 51.2 metres the „CSCL Star“ is able to load 20 container rows in the vessel width and has a maximum draught of 15.5 metres when fully loaded.

“CSCL Star“ is the first container vessel of China Shipping that offers more than 10,000 TEU slot capacity. The fleet covers about 450 ships in total, among them 143 container carriers. CSCL has currently 15 newbuildings between 3,000 and 8,500 TEU on order, moreover seven identical units of the same size as “CSCL Star“. Five of them will be delivered by the Samsung shipyard in Koje (South Korea) in the year 2011. Hangzhou Zhao, Vice President China Shipping Container Lines, does not exclude that 18,000 TEU vessels can be of interest to the company in the future.

The China Shipping group was formed in July 1997 as a merger of several small public companies in Shanghai. Their main activity is shipping business with tankers, bulkers, conventional ships and container vessels (China Shipping Container Lines – CSCL). The container line started operating its activities in Europe in March 1999 and today operates more than 350 offices around the globe. With 70 international services China Shipping Container Lines counts among the world’s ten biggest liner shipping companies. The European head office is situated in Hamburg.
