First plans for „small scale“ LNG-terminal in the Port of Hamburg

New Bomin-Linde joint venture plans the first liquid gas terminal for the fuelling of ships in the Port of Hamburg

The creation of the first liquid gas terminal for the fuelling of ships is materialising in the Port of Hamburg. Bomin Linde LNG GmbH & Co. KG is launching projects to set up the infrastructure for storage and fuelling of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in European ports these weeks.

The first concrete step of the joint enterprise of Linde Group and Bomin, a subsidiary of Marquard & Bahls AG, is to set up a terminal for the fuelling of ships with LNG in the Port of Hamburg. On the terminal of Oiltanking, a company of Marquard & Bahls, located in the port, the first ways of implementing a so-called "small scale" LNG terminal are being examined according to legal terms. LNG has a promising future as ship fuel due to economic and environmental policy developments. From 2015 limit values will be reduced considerably for sulphur emissions of shipping in the North and Baltic Sea. On the one hand this means LNG enables shipping companies and shipowners to meet the new emission requirements sustainably and reduce operational costs of their ships. On the other hand, this is an opportunity for the Port of Hamburg to assume a pioneering role in the introduction of LNG as an alternative ship fuel in Europe.

Bomin Linde LNG sees this project as a major step to rapidly expand the infrastructure for LNG in many European ports. “A reliable partner for the provision of LNG as fuel for strategically important ports will give rise to the construction of LNG-driven ships. LNG is the most environmentally friendly and economically most efficient version by far to meet the new sulphur and nitrogen emission limits", says Mahinde Abeynaike, managing director of  Bomin Linde LNG GmbH & Co. KG, in charge of the establishment of infrastructure and financial issues.
