First Post-Panamax car carrier in Bremerhaven
Car Carrier M/V Glovis Spirit provides space for up to 7,300 vehicles; the ships cannot pass through the Panama Canal due to current dimensions
On December 9, the car carrier M/V Glovis Spirt called at Bremerhaven for the first time. Coming from South Africa, the vessel loaded 1,500 Hyundai/Kia cars, and such high & heavy cargo as construction equipment, buses and cranes rolled on board in Nordhafen. The next destination of the M/V Glovis Spirit is Durban, South Africa, before it then proceeds to Australia.
200 meters long, almost 35,4 meters wide, the vessel provides space for up to 7,300 vehicles and opens a new era in the Bremen ports. The Post-Panamax car carrier can transport 800 vehicles more than the previous Panamax vessels.
It was only three months ago that the M/V Glovis Spirit was put into service for Hyundai Glovis. The ro-ro ship is the first car carrier of the so-called Post-Panamax class. This refers to ships that cannot pass through the Panama Canal in its current size because of their dimensions. Enlargement of the link between the Atlantic and Pacific to a width of 55 meters is already in full swing, however.
