Flight operations only in Georgia: GW transports helicopter by truck

Gebrüder Weiss forwards helicopter of Wucher Helikopter on the road from Vorarlberg to the Caucasus

Gebrüder Weiss once again proves its competence as an expert for transports to the east. In the frame of a challenging project the forwarding company is transporting a helicopter for Wucher Helicopter by truck through six countries to the Georgian capital Tiflis. The client will use the aircraft worth EUR 1.5 million for heliskiing in the Caucasian vacation village of Gudauri, approximately 100 km north of Tbilisi. After the end of the skiing season the helicopter of the Eurocopter brand will be transported back to Austria in spring.

It was due to cost reasons that the people in charge decided on transport by truck: the helicopter would have needed about twice as much fuel for the 3,000 km flight compared to the fully loaded truck on the 3,700 km route by land. Furthermore, safety equipment and avalanche rescue gear, 40 pairs of skis, 25 airbag backpacks as well as a tank station and diverse spare parts were sent along as well. Before the aircraft could be loaded on a common mega trailer, the landing skids and the rotor blades had to be dismantled. With an otherwise required special semitrailer, costs would have been significantly higher. After about eight days of driving through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey, the transport shall arrive in Georgia.

“For us it was obvious that only Gebrüder Weiss can be considered for this transport,” says Wucher manager Thomas Türtscher. “The company has been a reliable partner in all transport and logistics matters for 30 years. Furthermore, GW is a true expert for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.” Also in Georgia, Gebrüder Weiss has been represented with its own branch for about one year.
