”Foreigners“ roaring around the ears of Austria’s transporters

Increasing transport volume for Austria’s mobility industry – but persistent price and cost pressure

Austria’s mobility industry registered a substantial improvement in the employment situation and transport volumes in 2010. The driving performance in road cargo transport rose 6.6 per cent compared to the previous year. Transport performance of Austria’s national railway enterprises grew 14.9 per cent as measured by ton kilometres. Transport volume on the Danube river grew 20.5 per cent in the first three quarters of the year, compared to 2009. Also air freight business at Austria’s airports (excluding Innsbruck and Klagenfurt) posted a plus of 19.1 per cent, which is a clear uptrend, as Mag. Alexander Klacska, president of the transport and communications division of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, announced at a press conference in Vienna.

In spite of the basically positive expectations of Austria’s mobility industry regarding the business situation and demand in the next six months, the transport enterprises will have to face big challenges. As a sign therefore Klacska named the share of domestic cargo transport enterprises which dropped from 47.5 per cent in 2009 to 45.4 per cent of the transport performance carried out with vehicles over 3.5 tons of maximum total weight on motorways and fast lanes. Particularly Slovak, Polish, Bulgarian and German competitors are driving around their ears. In the talk with journalists Klacska considered also the price situation as in need of improvements, referring to the lately risen costs.
