Freight transport on the Danube decreased in 2011

Freight transport volume on the Austrian segment of the river Danube decreased by 10 per cent in 2011

According to a survey conducted by Statistics Austria a total of 9.9 million tons of freight was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in the year 2011. This means a decrease in freight transport by 1.1 million tons or minus 10 per cent compared to 2010. The number of laden journeys declined by 0.6 per cent from 10,391 to 10,325. The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was down 16.2 per cent on 9.6 billion ton-kilometres. Around 2.1 billion tkm (-10.6%) of this transport performance was provided on the Austrian section of the Danube. The decline in transport volume and performance together with a stable number of laden journeys can be explained by the low water periods in 2011, a press release reads.

Total water throughput of the ports and landings on the national segment of the Danube river declined by 6.2 per cent or 0.5 million tons to 8.2 million tons in the reporting period. The ports in Linz registered a 12.3 per cent-decline to a water throughput of 4.6 million tons. Vienna’s ports faced a 6.3 per cent-decline in cargo volume handled on the water to 1.1 million tons, and the Port of Enns posted a 8.8 per cent-decline to 0.6 million tons. Port of Krems in turn was able to handle 50.7 per cent more tonnage or 0.5 million tons on the water. The remaining ports and landings handled a total of 1.5 million tons in water throughput, which is 5.8 per cent more than last year.

While the tonnage in inland transport rose by 23.8 per cent to 0.6 million tons in the reference year, the international goods receipt was reduced by 10.3 per cent to 5.6 million tons compared to the previous year. International goods dispatch showed a decrease in transport volume of 7.3 per cent to 1.5 million tons. For transit a drop of 16.8 per cent to 2.3 million tons was determined.

Transport volume of the cargo group “ores and metal scrap" reduced by 16.2 per cent to 2.9 million tons; “mineral oil products” declined by 7.3 per cent to 2 million tons, and “agricultural/forestry products and living animals" decreased 8 per cent to 1.6 million tons. Only “fertilisers” grew by 10.7 per cent to 1.2 million tons.
