Gefco obtains EU grant for block train service

Gefco’s block train between Vesoul and Kaluga replaces the daily departure of 44 trucks and obtains grant from the European Union program “Marco Polo”

The Gefco group announced that its project to implement a rail link between Vesoul, France, and Kaluga, Russia, has gained financial support of the European Commission’s Marco Polo programme. The multimodal transport connection via Germany and Poland supplies the PCMARus assembly plant, a joint venture between PSA Peugeot Citroën and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in Russia. It is one of the biggest multimodal projects in Europe.

The implementation of a daily rail link to transport semi-knocked down (SKD) automotive parts between Vesoul and Kaluga is be the result of a year-long period of study by Gefco and its partners Captrain Deutschland and Transcontainer Russia. The service is replacing the daily departure of 44 trucks and reduces shipment times from eight to five days.

Throughout the Marco Polo project, Gefco plans to transfer more than 411 million tonkilometres from road to rail, thus far exceeding the 60 million tonkilometres required by the EU-Commission to qualify for the programme. With the EUR 539,000-grant the Commission considers the Vesoul-Kaluga link to be a financially viable project, which will continue after funding has ceased.
