Growth and container-innovation with Lufthansa Cargo

Lufthansa Cargo: Considerable increase in volumes in the first half of 2011 and introduction of new light weight containers:

Lufthansa Cargo registered a tonnage plus of 14.8 per cent to 953,000 tons in the first six months of the current business year. Its load factor reached 69.1 per cent. “We have harnessed the robust development of the global economy and sustained the growth momentum from the previous year,“ said Lufthansa Cargo Chairman and CEO Karl Ulrich Garnadt about the development. He considers the addition of new destinations and investment in the ongoing development of their special products as growth drivers.

The container fleet of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo is to be partly replaced by new containers made from light composite materials from autumn. Small boxes for use in the lower deck of passenger and freight aircraft will be renewed until 2015. The new containers will be up to 15 per cent lighter and will hence be a profit to the environment. “This way we can save up to 2,180 tons of kerosene per year and 6,867 tons of CO2“, Lufthansa says in a press release. In total around 5,000 containers will be changed.

Lufthansa Cargo and the subsidiary Jettainer, which is in charge of the logistics management of loading means, have tested on board the new containers that are suitable for the transport of travellers’ luggage as well as for freight shipments. All safety and handling options were tested in this course. According to the enterprise the containers need less repair work as opposed to conventional loading means made from aluminium and meet all required standards.
