Growth in air freight close to zero

International Air Transport Association (IATA) released figures for air cargo transport in May 2013 showing relatively good development in Europe

International market for air freight is almost stagnating. This is the result of the transport figures released by International Air Transport Association (IATA) for May 2013, which were presented on June 2. Accordingly, global freight tonne kilometres increased 0.8 per cent in May compared to the same month in the previous year. The weak increase appears to be the result of a recent softening in growth in developing economies, including China. At the same time capacity increased by 2.1 per cent, causing load factors to fall to 44.9 per cent.

European carriers grew 1 per cent year-on-year, the second-best growth of all regions, after Middle Eastern carriers, who grew 9.7 per cent; and followed by African carriers, who grew 0.2 per cent. Latin American carriers’ cargo volumes fell 0.1%. Asia-Pacific volumes fell 0.5 per cent; North American carriers posted a 1.2 per cent-decline in demand for air cargo.
