More cargo throughput at Belgian Port of Zeebrugge

Port of Zeebrugge registered a significant rise in container traffic with the Middle and Far East in 2009

In spite of clearly declining roro volumes the Belgian seaport of Zeebrugge registered a positive development of the cargo throughput in 2009. With a total volume of 44.86 million tons they exceeded last year’s figure by 6.8 per cent. This is mostly due to increases in container traffic (up 17.4 per cent to 24.9 million tons) and in the Liquid Bulk segment (up 28.9 per cent to 8 million tons). The Conventional Cargo segment achieved a slight increase of 1.7 per cent to 852,000 tons.

The setback of the British economy and the worldwide slump in the new vehicles business became apparent in the roro segment of the Port of Zeebrugge. With 9.5 million tons the volume was down 19.5 per cent on 2008. The number of new cars that were handled in the port decreased by 39.5 per cent to 1.286 million units.
