Hafen Rostock: Sound increase in cargo volumes

Rostock seaport saw positive first half-term results for 2014 in spite of weak economic upswing in the industrialised countries

A total of 12.9 million tonnes (gross) of goods passed the quay walls in Rostock during the first six months of 2014. Of this, 11.9 million tonnes were handled in the seaport and one million tonnes at other port facilities in Rostock, such as the chemical port of Yara and the cargo and fishing port. The cargo volumes handled at all the port facilities of Rostock thus show a neat increase of 14 per cent compared to the first six months of last year.

At 11.9 million tonnes of goods handled at the seaport in the first six months of 2014, last year’s result was exceeded by 1.5 million tonnes, or 14 per cent. Wheeled cargo of ferry and ro-ro traffic accounted for 6.5 million tonnes thereof. There was an increase by 300,000 tonnes or five percent in this segment. The share of ferry and ro-ro goods in the overall handling at the all-purpose port of Rostock amounted to 55 per cent in the first six months.

45 per cent or 5.4 million tonnes were achieved with the handling of dry and liquid bulk goods and general cargo, which means an increase by 1.2 million tonnes or 29 per cent compared to the first half of 2013. „Now that the railway line between Rostock and Berlin can once again be fully used for cargo transport after two years of building work, the handling of cargoes like cement has returned to the overseas port. Also, grain handling at Rostock is moving into a new dimension“, explains Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of the Port Development Company, in view of the positive half-term results, adding: „But basically the cyclical upswing in the industrialized countries remains weak and falls short of expectations six years after the start of the financial crisis and the subsequent deepest recession of the last 60 years. Of course this still affects the amounts of cargo to be carried and handled.“

Between January and June 2014 the port of Rostock recorded 3,883 calls by ferry, ro-ro, cargo and cruise vessels, 2,741 of which were port calls by ferries. 161,171 trucks (accompanied units) were carried on the four ferry and three ro-ro links to and from Denmark, Sweden and Finland, a three per cent increase. Handling of unaccompanied units (trailers) stayed on the level of last year, 55,972 trailers having been loaded and unloaded.

32 weekly intermodal transport trains are handled at the intermodal transport terminal, running to and from Verona (11), Hamburg (5), Karlsruhe (5), Novara (4), Brno (4), Domodossola (2) and Wels (1). The number of the trailer units handled at the intermodal terminal increased from 32,981 in the first half of 2013 to 33,934 this year with an overall tonnage of 718,266.

There was another downer for general cargo. 208,000 tonnes were hoisted over the quay walls, 25,000 tonnes less than in the first half of 2013. There were losses in amounts handled in sheet metal, slabs and wind power plants. Quite a few wind power plants are however being carried on ferry and ro-ro vessels by now and are recorded in those goods categories.
