Hamburg Freeport becomes European Customs Seaport

Flyer with information to support truckers and dispatchers during transition to European Customs Seaport in Hamburg

After almost 125 years, the turn of the year will bring the history of the Hamburg Freeport to an end: The Port of Hamburg will become a European Customs Seaport from 1 January 2013. This will involve changes in the handling of traffic in goods. To adjust themselves to the new procedures, firms based in the present Freeport zone (covers roughly one-fifth of the entire port area) will already be observing European Customs Seaport regulations from December 2012. To ease the transitional phase to new customs processes, the Port of Hamburg released the flyer  From Freeport to European Customs Seaport , containing practical hints for truckers and dispatchers.

In view of the changed international security situation, the World Customs Organization and the European Union have set new conditions for the control of cross-border goods traffic. In future customs registration procedures will be uniform in all ports in the EU irrespective of their status in customs law. The shift to a largely electronic customs clearance will make fences and borders superfluous. Double costs burdens caused by the requirements of the existing two customs systems in the port shall disappear, and traffic handling shall be speeded up.
