Hamburg remains the most important container port for Austria

For the 40th time, on 3rd May the traditional Hamburg Port evening took place at a Viennese Heurigen restaurant. About 250 guests accepted the invitation of Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. (HHM), making this event the largest in the maritime industry in Austria. The HHM board emphasised

once again, that Austria and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are a very important market for the Port of Hamburg.

Hamburg has been the most important seaport for the Austrian market without interruption since the beginning of containerised transport. This dominant position was once again defended in 2017, as around 280,000 TEU came via Hamburg to the republic of the Alps. “98 per cent of all transports were carried by rail.

“Since there are no significant increases on the Austria – Hamburg route, the transports can be carried out consistently with only one locomotive and the maximum permitted train length. This is a decisive competitive advantage for the Port of Hamburg, which is greatly appreciated by the Austrian industry”, Alexander Till, Head of the HHM Representative Office Vienna underlined in his speech. With a network of currently 80 container train sets per week, the port at the Elbe river is the leading port for railway traffic with Austria.

The operations of the Port of Hamburg Representative Office Vienna, which are supported, among other things, by more than 200 personal visits, many events and delegation trips, are an important element of the success of the Port of Hamburg in Austria. The next event will take place on June 13th, 2018 with the longtime HHM member and partner CTS Container Terminals Salzburg in Anif near Salzburg.
