Hermes Transport Logistics and Europipe opt for carbon-free rail freight

Hermes Transport Logistics and the industrial corporation Europipe are new customers for Eco Plus, the carbon-free service from DB Schenker Rail in which the required traction current is obtained from renewable energy sources in Germany.

Hermes Transport Logistics has had its transport on the Hamburg-Kornwestheim and Hamburg-Bamberg routes handled by carbon-free rail freight since October, making it the first combined transport customer to switch its rail transport to this carbon-free alternative.

The transport of 1,400 TEU per year is handled by the operator TFG Transfracht Internationale Gesellschaft für kombinierten Güterverkehr.

By switching to Eco Plus, Hermes can reduce its CO2 emissions by 112 tons per year, compared with standard rail transport.

Europipe is based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and now uses Eco Plus on the Mülheim-Brake route for transporting pipes for pipes for the planned Baltic Sea pipeline.

Up to three block trains consisting of 27 freight cars travel on this route every day, saving 300 tons of CO2 compared with standard rail transport. According to Europipe’s senior manager of logistics, Jens Häselhoff, by the time the project is completed, a total volume of 90,000 tons will have been carried via this carbon-free option.

Customers can choose to switch over to Eco Plus on all routes inside Germany. Those wishing to check their own carbon footprint precisely for routes all over the world can do so with DB Schenker Rail’s online tool, EcoTransIT World, which reliably calculates the emissions of CO2 and other pollutants for different transport modes, such as train, truck, aircraft, seagoing vessels and barges and for combined transport options.
