HHLA-subsidiary HPC Ukraina expands Odessa Container Terminal

Capacity at Odessa Container Terminals (OCT) is to be expanded to 850,000 TEU per year before 2012

HPC Ukraina is about to tackle the expansion of the Odessa Container Terminal (OCT). The Ukrain subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG invests around EUR 70 million into the “Quarantäne Mole“-expansion program before 2012. The management and service contract concerning the operation of the OCT will be renewed for 20 years until the end of 2044.

According to the company the expansion program establishes ideal conditions for the handling of container vessels with a capacity of 6,000 to 9,000 TEU. This will be the response to the continuous growth of the size of vessels in the Black Sea, as the HHLA group communicates in a press release. „Odessa is the most significant and important port in Ukraine and has priority for ship owners. The acceptance of the expansion project enables us to secure our strategic position in the Black Sea,” Klaus Schmöcker, President of HPC Ukraina points out.

After completion of the expansion OCT will offer around 650 metres of quay facilities at a water depth of 14.5 metres. The annual capacity of the site will then be 850,000 TEU. Afterwards the terminal shall be expanded according to demand to an annual capacity of up to 1.2 million TEU in a final stage.

HPC Ukraina has been operating the OCT since 2001. In the years 2007 and 2008 the terminal had a throughput volume at more than 500,000 TEU and worked on the limit of its capacity. After the considerable slump in 2009, volumes recovered by around 45 per cent from January to June 2010 compared to the previous year.
