Huge fire breaks out at Turkish port after earthquake

A fire broke out at the port of the Turkish city of İskenderun where dozens of cargo containers were set ablaze.

So far, more than 19,300 people have lost their lives as an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck, and affected surrounding countries Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Georgia, and Armenia.

Photos from NEXTA of the Port of Iskenderun, located on the Mediterranean Sea, show flames and smoke coming from toppled containers.

In addition, BP Azerbaijan has declared force majeure on loading of crude oil from the Turkish port of Ceyhan. According to Reuters, the notice was issued to shippers following the suspension of operations from the Ceyhan Marine Terminal.

The fire at the port has since been extinguished but it is unclear when the port will reopen to international shipping lines. Currently, the damaged containers are under inspection.
