ICA shipps import containers with river vessels

Intercontainer Austria moves containers from Rotterdam to Enns

Last weekend the container operator Intercontainer Austria mastered a critical situation by using an unconventional solution. About 100 heavy import containers had to be carried off the Port of Rotterdam as soon as possible. A “re-routing” of the boxes on the sea to Hamburg and Bremerhaven was not possible. It would have caused to high costs for interim storage at the Port of Rotterdam for the customers.

As there was no chance to organise four additional trains at short term, a river vessel was chartered for the transportation of the containers from Rotterdam to Enns. The MS „Elly“, a river vessel of the river shipping line MSG, started the journey to Austria on May 5, with 76 containers loaded. The trip will take 8 to 10 days. Hence a new facet of combined transport gained ground within the enterprise, Wilhelm Patzner, Managing Director of ICA, comments on the unconventional transport.
