IDS Logistik achieved new record in general cargo volume in 2013

Deutsche Stückgutkooperation IDS Logistik carried less international shipments in 2013 and is expecting a growing market for the current year

IDS Logistik GmbH (Kleinostheim), Germany’s biggest cooperative for general cargo transport, had to face a slight decline in international business in 2013. With 1.9 million forwarded shipments the reference figure from 2012 was missed by 100,000 shipments. While exports to Northern and Western Europe developed positively, the economic situation in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain had a slowdown effect on export demand.

Volume transported within Germany rose by 200,000 to 9.4 million shipments or 2.5 million tonnes. In total a record volume of 11.3 million shipments was transported, resulting in turnover of EUR 1.74 billion (+1.74% on 2012). “The 0.8 per cent-increase of shipments in the total year reflected only partially the dynamics we saw in the business in autumn and pre-Christmans business“, says Michael Bargl, managing director IDS Logistik GmbH. “The first six months of the year 2013 had been rather disappointing, only the second half of the year saw a marked improvement.“

For the current year the IDS management expects an upbeat market showing three to five per cent growth in volume and turnover. As preparation therefore the IDS partners have expanded their capacities. Two new depots were added – the Noerpel-site Villingen and the facility of Ascherl in Rosenheim. Large new buildings replaced the sites of Geis (regional hub Satteldorf) and Weisshaupt (Albstadt). In March 2014 DSV will open a new logistics facility for general cargo throughput in Westerkappeln, North-Westphalia, as a replacement for the previous site in Osnabrück.

IDS Logistik GmbH has 5,900 employees at 45 sites making it the biggest general cargo cooperative in Germany. Transportations to other Europan countries are implemented through the national companies of the franchisees and selected partners in Europe. The full service offer ranges from procurement and storage to distribution and returns management. In addition to the B2B segment the IDS partners also serve special demands of B2C shipments, which see enormous growth rates thanks to online trade.
