Innofreight boss misses investment into modern freight cars

Everything that is done in Austria and Europe for the further development of freight transport by rail was welcomed. However, this should not be forgotten on the urgently needed modernisation of freight wagon fleets. Peter Wankek-Pusset, Managing Director of Innofreight Solutions GmbH based in Bruck an der Mur, addressed this urgent appeal last week to Transport Minister Norbert Hofer and Andreas Matthä, ÖBB’s General Director.

In his statement at the Spring Festival of Terminal Service Austria, the Innofreight boss estimated the average age of ÖBB freight cars at the age of 20. For the other rail companies, the status quo is even worse, which is why modernisation of wagon fleets is essential.

Peter Wanek-Pusset pointed out: “In Europe there is a capacity for the production of about 20,000 freight cars a year.” For comparison: The annual volume produced by the commercial vehicle manufacturer Volvo Trucks is around 100,000 trucks.
