Interim stop of river shipping on the Main-Danube canal

Maintenance works at locks of Main, Main-Danube canal and Danube – 16 days break for shipping effective from Monday, 13 April 2015

Like every year in April, also this year comprehensive maintenance works have to be effected at the locks of Main, Main-Danube canal and the Danube, which are not possible without interrupting shipping operation.

The continuous navigation will be stopped from April 13, for 16 days on the 760 km trans-European waterway. However, local passenger ships can operate locally. On Wednesday, 29 April 2015, at 12 clock reads the passage will be open again for navigation on the Main. About 6 million tonnes of freight are carried annually by 6,000 ships on the Main above Würzburg.

The water and shipping authority (WSA) Schweinfurt, responsible for the locks of the Main from Rothfels to Viereth has again ordered a comprehensive construction and maintenance program for the 50 – 80 years old locks for approximately EUR 3.2 million. The Steinbach, Dettelbach, Garstadt, and Viereth locks will be „drained“ from April 13 to perform necessary inspection and repair work at the locks in „dry“ state. The Dettelbach and Viereth locks will get new lock gates.

All measures are subject to a strict schedule and are conducted by staff of the WSA Schweinfurt and from a variety of specialized companies. The tight scheduling is necessary to reduce the time of the interruption as far as possible for the cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The date was therefore agreed with the inland navigation industry already 2 years ago, so that the river shipping industry and ports could attune with the interruption on the long term.
