Launch of Port Antwerp Intermodal Solutions

Port of Antwerp starting new initiatives to present and improve connections with the hinterland

Port of Antwerp presents itself more forcefully as gateway for the hinterland. Therefore they are launching Port of Antwerp Intermodal Solutions. This brand new partnership between the Port Authority and the umbrella federation Alfaport will offer the port community designated solutions to improve connections with the hinterland.

The new cell is the first point of contact and coordination for the development of various initiatives, ranging from the development of new target regions for the port to favorably influencing the modal split (the way goods are transported, ect.). In addition to this, Intermodal Solutions has resources to facilitate interesting intermodal projects that fit within the strategy of the Antwerp port community and to work them out so they are tailored to meet customer requirements. This has included working on developing improved rail links in Duisburg (Germany) and Vienna (Austria). The terminals in the Waaslandhaven shall soon have better links with the other maritime container terminals. Intermodal Solutions also generated the Port of Antwerp Connectivity Platform which was launched on 18 October.

The Port of Antwerp Connectivity Platform was developed to provide customers of the port with more information about various transport options and the most optimal way they can transport their goods to their destination. On the one hand it provides information on the possibilities in the port. On the other hand, the Connectivity Platform describes the intermodal connections to and from the European hinterland.

To make the platform even more user-friendly for customers of the port, the Antwerp Departure & Arrival List, containing information about the arrival and departure of ships in the Port of Antwerp, was integrated into the Connectivity Platform. The Platform may be consulted via www.portofantwerp.com/en/connectivity. Following the launch, the focus will also be on adding more terminals – indeed, our ambition is to chart from actually 185 points in 15 European countries to more than 300 terminals.

“With this platform we guide our customers in a transparent manner through the extensive range of connections to and from the port. The starting point for any search is a cost-effective, but also durable connection between the port and the final destination of the goods”, says Eddy Bruyninckx, CEO of the Antwerp Port Authority.
