Less forwarding business at Deutsche Post DHL

Deutsche Post DHL feels impact of economic crisis

The international economic crisis shows consequences also in the “Global Forwarding, Freight“ unit of the logistics enterprise Deutsche Post DHL. In the first three months of 2009 turnover fell 18.2 per cent to EUR 2.66 billion compared to the previous year. EBIT amounted to EUR 45 million after EUR 78 million in the first quarter of 2008.

In the reporting period the “Global Forwarding“ unit recorded a 18.6%-decline in turnover to EUR 1.92 billion. This is mainly due to the decline in air freight exportations by 26 per cent. Sea freight volumes showed a more moderate decline of 10 per cent. In its quarterly report the “Freight“-unit (land transport) showed a turnover of EUR 762 million (minus 15.5%).

Thanks to reduced costs Deutsche Post DHL was able to keep the results of the “Supply Chain“-unit (contract logistics) on a stable level. Despite the 6 per cent smaller turnover EBIT amounted to EUR 34 million. Turnover of the “Express“-unit plummeted by 25.9 per cent to EUR 2.5 billion in the first three months. In this context the EBIT loss excluding non-recurring effects amounting to EUR 120 million is also a factor.

In total the group reported a decline in turnover of 12.9 per cent to EUR 11.5 billion in the first quarter of 2009. EBIT excluding non-recurring effects declined by 42.1 per cent to EUR 312 million.
