Logistic Challenge“: Siemens delivers first regional train for Sochi

Delivery of the first Siemens regional trainset Desiro RUS from for Sochi (Russia) is a major logistical challenge

The Russian Railways (RZD) visited the first Desiro RUS regional train set at the Siemens plant in Krefeld and released for shipment. February marks the start of the transport by ship to the Russian seaport of Ust Luga. From there the travel is continued on the rail to the depot at St. Petersburg, from where the trains start their licensing runs. The chassis for the Russian regional trains will be manufactured at the Siemens plant in Graz.

Production of the RUS Desiro at the Siemens plant in Krefeld has begun in April 2011. Nine months later, in late January 2012, Siemens and the RZD signed the transportation-release of the first of 38 units. In mid-February delivery to Russia is launched.

The transport of the just under five meters high and 3.5 meters wide vehicle presents a major challenge to the logistics specialists at Siemens: the cars are too wide and too high to forward them by rail or road across Germany to the ferry port of Sassnitz (Rügen Island). Therefore, the choice fell on the waterway, from Krefeld via Amsterdam to Rügen. There, the railcars are first placed on their appropriate track – that is, on Russian gauge 1,520 mm width – and coupled to the train. A locomotive pushes the Desiro RUS then on the rails to the cargo compartment of the train ferry. Their arrival in the Russian port of Ust Luga is planned for March 2012. From there, the regional trains are transferred to their first test trips at a depot near St. Petersburg.
