Logistics hub in Burghausen is ready to start

Cargo terminal in Burghausen combines the strength of road and rail – EUR 30 million investment to strengthen the location in Upper Bavaria

A new hub for cargo transport strengthens the location of the Upper Bavarian Chemical Triangle and its core Burghausen. The industry sees the future in combined transport – of road and rail. The just completed cargo terminal of Burghausen allows for fast rail transport of cargo to the North Sea ports. In addition, the transhipment station located at the main road 20 is an attractive site for North Italian ports, which are gaining significance.

On 19 January this facility – which is of particular importance to the industry in the Chemical Triiangle – will be inaugurated and start operation. EUR 30 million have been invested by the public authorities there. The lion’s share to improve infrastructure will be financed by the Federation, thus the federal railway authority. Hence local investors had to contribute equity capital at the amount of EUR 8.6 million. The city of Burghausen accounted for the biggest share of it, which is also the majority shareholder, holding 72 per cent of RegioInvest, and gives a deficiency guarantee to the other associates – the administrative district, a bank and the chemical enterprises Wacker and Borealis.

The terminal will be operated by a consortium consisting of four companies, including three subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn AG. The leasing contract will be valid for 20 years; they agreed on a total lease of EUR 18.8 million for this entire period. Thus Burghausen as a logistics site is side by side with the existing hubs in Munich, Nuremberg and Deggendorf.

Four tracks and a 320 tonnes gantry crane allow for 48,000 lifts per year (in the planned second stage of expansion it will be 80,000). 216 trucks per day can be loaded or unloaded on a total track length of 650 metres. This means a daily capacity of four trains, or seven in the second stage. The depot of the terminal offers space for 1,200 containers. As to environmental standards, the terminal is Germany’s state-of-the-art terminal because of the chemical goods. In case of emergency liquids that exit will be led into a storage system.
