Lufthansa Cargo gets a ticket to the future

Lufthansa Cargo’s first Triple Seven cargo aircraft named Good Day USA is a key element of the ‘Lufthansa Cargo 2020’ future programme

In the late afternoon of November 19 the newly christened “Good Day, USA” took off in Frankfurt for its maiden flight to New York. Lufthansa Cargo is thus heralding a new era of flying with the Boeing 777 freighter, emitting less noise and CO2 than the previously used MD-11-jumbo freighters. The new aircraft will be permanently based in Frankfurt.

“The Boeing 777F is not only the most powerful, efficient and ecological freighter in the world but also a highly visible symbol of our ‘Lufthansa Cargo 2020’ future programme,” emphasised CEO Karl Ulrich Garnadt to journalists. Besides the modernisation of the freighter fleet, EUR 100 million is also being invested in new IT systems. In addition to this, Lufthansa Cargo is planning to build a new logistics centre in Frankfurt.

The maiden commercial flight of the aircraft equipped with an “electronic flight bag” system was routed to New York/JFK and then Atlanta in the US state of Georgia. The next destination of the Boeing 777F will be Chicago on Wednesday. With a full payload of 103 tonnes, the aircraft is able to remain in the air for ten and a half hours. This means the twin-engine Boeing freighter can fly non-stop for more than 9,000 kilometres, enabling Lufthansa Cargo to fly direct from Frankfurt to the world’s busiest cargo airport in Hong Kong, for example.
