Management of Maersk Line expects significantly improving results for 2010

2009 was quite a bad fiscal year for Maersk Line. In the balance hot off the press the Danish container shipping company shows a drastic decline of sales revenues and high losses. Turnover fell 28.1 per cent on 2008 to USD 20.6 billion. The result of the liner shipping business posted severe losses at the amount of USD 2.08 billion (in 2008: plus USD 583 million).

For the current financial year the Maersk Line Management gives an outlook to a significantly improved result. The shortage of transport capacities and increasing freight rates would cause a positive development of the profit situation, as the company headquarters in Copenhagen announced. As for freight volumes a growth between 3 and 5 per cent can be expected.

Maersk Line is a division of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. The group closed the year 2009 with a turnover of USD 48.5 billion (2008: USD 61.2 billion) and a result of minus USD 1.02 billion (2008: plus USD 3.46 billion). APM Terminals, the operator of 50 container terminals in 34 countries, has generated a turnover of USD 3.02 billion with a segment result of plus USD 442 million (2008: plus USD 302 million) in the reporting period.
