Many new accounts for Wincanton in Germany

Despite the global economic crisis the transport and logistics service provider Wincanton plc. generated growth in key figures of the fiscal year 2008/09. Total revenue rose 9.1 per cent compared to the previous year to GBP 2.16 billion (EUR 3.1 billion). Operating profit improved by 13.5 per cent to GBP 52.4 (EUR 74 million).

“Wincanton has a portfolio of businesses which offer both shorter-term resilience and attractive growth potential. By working even more closely with our customers in these challenging times, we strengthen our relationships, enhance our industry reputation and reinforce our market leading position”. Graeme McFaull, Chief Executive of the Wincanton Group, commented on the positive result.

The German Wincanton GmbH reported on success in 2008/09 as well. The contract logistics division „Solutions“ concluded many new businesses. According to the company, the market leading intermodal-division also showed profit, but of course a little less than in the previous year. In response to the demand, which had been declining as a result of the crisis, capacities were adjusted. The business division “Road Transport“ was able to reduce its losses compared to the previous year. A comprehensive programme to cut costs and increase efficiency showed its first positive impact. The general cargo division recorded declining volumes during the last months.

Wincanton counts among the leading providers of logistics and transport solutions in Europe. In addition to contract logistics, international transport and distribution services based on the company’s network structures are also part of the portfolio. Moreover, the company develops and implements multimodal transport concepts including the use of river shipping and railway, and specialised solutions for the high-tech industry. The main activities are focussed on the industries automotive, fast moving consumer goods, trade and petrochemicals. The enterprise employs 30,000 persons at around 400 sites in Europe.
