Maersk Liner Business is in the red in 2011 and 2012

Liner shipping business of A.P. Moller-Maersk Group feels the consequences of overcapacities in global container traffic

In the corporate headquarters of A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, there are no signs of a rapid upward trend in the global container shipping business. At the presentation of the balance of 2011, the management forecasts operating loss for the current year. Market growth was below the increase of the capacities pushing new into business in the form of large container ships, was the tenor of the core statements.

In the 2011 financial year Maersk Liner Business generated a turnover at USD 25.1 billion (up 5 per cent compared to 2010) with operating losses of USD 483 million (2010: up USD 2.82 billion). Including the financial results losses amounted to USD 532 million after USD 2.8 billion in profit in 2010. In its annual report hot off the press the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group announces USD 60.2 billion in turnover and profit of USD 3.4 billion.

The Maersk Liner Business covers the shipping lines Maersk Line, Safmarine, MCC and Seago Line with 645 vessels of 2.5 million TEU transport capacity. This fleet carried about 16.2 million TEU in 2011, which means an increase of eleven per cent compared to 2010. Freight rates declined by eight per cent between 2010 and 2011. In the current year the Maersk Liner Business management localises the biggest growth potential on the North-South corridors.
