MDK establishes bimodal facility in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg

Port landing of the Mierka Donauhafen Krems in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg to start operation as of May 2012

As of May 2012 a port landing in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg near the Austrian-Slovakian border will be acting as a strategic point for the handling of parts and components of the wind power industry from barges to trucks. In the coming weeks the company Mierka Donauhafen Krems will prepare the 100 meters pier for future requirements. The adjustment works, totalling several hundred thousand Euros according to Hubert Mierka, include waterside measures as well as improving the access lanes for trucks and special transport vehicles. The project as such is based on an agreement between Mierka Donauhafen Krems and via donau Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft m.b.H. (Vienna).

The main user of the port landing will be the Enercon company from Aurach, which is specialising in the production and distribution of wind power plants. The prefabricated segments for concrete towers and large components produced in Germany, destined for wind power plants in Burgenland, were previously handled at the Mierka Donauhafen Krems. Enercon logistics manager Dr. Mathias Moser expects the change of the site to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg to optimise the handling of road transport on the “last mile”. The concrete towers were handled by Prangl, using mobile cranes.
