Milestone in container traffic at the seaport of Rotterdam
Container throughput in the Dutch seaport of Rotterdam reached the 1-million-TEU-benchmark in March 2011 for the first time
In the month of March, the Dutch port of Rotterdam reached a record. The “mainport” was the first sea cargo hub in Europe to handle 1 million containers TEU in a month. The Port of Rotterdam Authority considers this as a significant milestone since the port of Rotterdam entered the market segment of container logistics. Port of Rotterdam has been offering services related to handling container consignments for 45 years. Apart from some exceptions volume always showed an uptrend. In 1974 they reached the 1-million-TEU-benchmark. In 1997 they posted 5 million TEU for the first time. This figure has doubled until 2007 to 10 million TEU.
