These days Neustädter Hafen in Bremen celebrates its 50th anniversary. Today a broad range of conventional general cargo is handled in the harbor. The focal points are steel and forestry products, rail vehicles, machines and equipment as well as project cargo. This also includes gigantic components of gas processing plants, complete production lines and dismantled factory facilities. In addition to this, the port is more and more used to complete industrial plants directly on the deep water of the port. Thus regularly very big components with several hundred tons of weight are handled there.

Through regular liner services the Neustädter Hafen is connected to ports all over the world, particularly in the U.S., the Mediterranean region and the Far East. The port has transport connections via road, rail and water. Another advantage is the direct link to the GVZ cargo centre, where numerous freight forwarders and logistics companies are located.

On February 5, 1964 the Riederstein, owned by Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL), was the first ship to sail into the Neustädter Hafen basin on the left bank of the Weser. At that time there was nothing else besides the basin. Sheds and cranes were not set up until later, first on the west side and then little by little also on the east side.

In the mid-1960s it became apparent that the American shipping company Sea-Land wanted to set up a scheduled container service across the Atlantic Sea and was looking for suitable ports on the North Sea coast for that purpose. Bremen and Rotterdam were finally awarded the contract. However, Neustädter Hafen had to be redesigned for container transshipment during the ongoing construction work. That is how the Bremen Container Terminal came into being.
