New Metrans inland terminal in Ostrava

German-Czech intermodal company can handle up to 150,000 TEU per year at its new terminal in Ostrava

The German-Czech intermodal company Metrans has opened a new inland terminal in Ostrava. Thus the HHLA subsidiary is improving the connection of one of the most important central European industry regions to Hamburg, the most significant seaport for the Czech Republic.

Since June daily trains with 92 standard containers (TEU) have been operating between Ostrava and Prague, the hub between the north European seaports and south-eastern Europe. The annual capacity of the new facility is 150,000 TEU; which means it meets the highest European levels for combined transport.

With this newbuilding Metrans responds to the growing demand for container transportations on the railway. They are considering enhancing their capacities in the form of a link between the terminal to Duisburg, the Benelux countries and Slovenia. Currently the 30,000 m² terminal area is equipped with four Reachstackers and one portal crane for rail throughput (RTG) with a reach of 30 metres. The devices are handling shuttle trains on 650 metres tracks, coming from the seaports via the throughput terminal in Prague, without shunting. Customers are provided on demand a "Full Service"-parcel, including container depot and forwarding by truck.

Metrans connects the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and more countries of this region via efficient rail transport and container hubs to the German seaports. On the main corridor between Prague and Hamburg 102 trains are operated per week. By now 75 per cent of the cargo from overseas is transported on the railway between Germany and the Czech Republic.
