New plans to promote river shipping in Austria

EUR 2 million promotional funds for adaptation of inland vessels; 7.8 per cent-increase in cargo volume transported on the Danube in Austria in 2012

Austrian river shipping companies will receive more support from the federal government. In a press talk on the occasion of the presentation of the 2012 river shipping balance, MR DI Reinhard Vorderwinkler, Head of the highest shipping authority of the bmvit (Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology), announced the introduction of a new funds program, which is to start this summer and will run to 2016. It is endowed with EUR 2 million. These means are earmarked for investments into environmental technology and safety measures, such as RIS.

In 2012 about 10.7 million tonnes of cargo were transported on the Austrian segment of the Danube river, equalling a 7.8 per cent-increase on 2011. Exports volume rose 5 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes of goods. Imports volume declined 2.3 per cent on 2011 to 5.4 million tonnes. Domestic transport has doubled to 1.2 million tonnes. However, this increase is a result of the transport of mineral resources, agricultural and forestry products.

Capacity utilisation of the inland vessels amounted to 66.3 per cent. These figures were presented by DI Hans-Peter Hasenbichler, Managing Director via donau, at the presentation of the 2012 Annual Report on Danube Navigation.
