New state of the art ship for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics

MV Tijuca Named at Ceremony in Melbourne, Australia

One of world’s largest and most environmentally adapted car and truck carrying vessels, MV Tijuca, was named today in Melbourne, Australia. The Lady Sponsor is Mrs Andrea Schrempp, wife of Wolfgang D Schrempp, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific, an important global customer for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL).

Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific has had a successful and long-standing relationship with WWL and its predecessors with the importation of cars and other vehicles to Australia/New Zealand for over 50 years. Built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering yard in Korea for owner Wilh. WIlhelmsen, MV Tijuca is able to carry up to 8 000 cars or a combination of 3 486 cars and 466 trucks/buses. Key customer benefits of the new vessel are reinforced and moveable vehicle decks and an extra wide and strong 320 tonnes capacity stern ramp.

Investment for improved service

The new ship will replace an older and smaller vessel in the WWL Australia service, offering great dependability with increased capacity for high and heavy rolling cargoes such as agricultural, mining and construction machinery and non-containerised and static cargoes such as power generation and mining equipment.  This service provides six sailings per month from Europe, including four direct from North America.

As the provider of infrastructure in the port, Melbourne Port Corporation has an important role to play in securing the future of ro-ro operations in the port in the interests of import and export customers servicing the Victorian, Tasmanian and South Australian markets. Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics integrated factory to dealer supply chain model requires continued development and modernisation of cost effective facilities in the port that are seamlessly linked to the companies vehicle processing and distribution facilities.
