New terminal for the rolling road in the Trieste region

Rail Cargo Group: Rolling road between Salzburg and Trieste to start and end at Trieste-Fernetti terminal

The Rail Cargo Group’s rolling road service between Salzburg and Trieste (up to three daily train services per course) has a new station in Italy since a few weeks ago. The railway station Trieste Campo Marzio located directly in the port was replaced by the Terminal Intermodale di Trieste-Fernetti, directly located on the motorway to the port of Trieste.

“The new RoLa terminal in the Autoporto Fernetti is very advantageous for us“, states Erik Regter, CEO Rail Cargo Group. “This terminal has good infrastructure, which is an advantage for forwarding companies and considerably improves production processes in Trieste. Moreover the rolling road connection upgrades the Terminal Fernetti and the entire region.“

The rolling road trains are operated with RCG locomotives in own production. This improves the use of vehicles and transport management. Every train is monitored regarding punctuality and itinerary. ÖBB-TAURUS 3 high performance locomotives have the technical equipment allowing operation in Italy. Only change of staff takes place at the border railway station Tarvisio Boscoverde. The train services can be handled faster and more punctual.

“This new terminal is a milestone in our cooperation with the Italian rail operator Alpe Adria and the Turkish ferry operator U.N. RO-RO“, says Erik Regter. Our cooperation with Alpe Adria ensures high frequency on the connection with the port and the economic area Trieste, and the important integration to the Friuli Venezio Giulia region,“ he adds.

U.N. RO-RO and Rail Cargo Group have been cooperating for many years in the rolling road segment. They are currently negotiating the deepening of the partnership, to provide a better connection of Turkey to north-western Europe. “Our common objective is to shift more transportations from road to rail“, Regter emphasises on the importance of this cooperation.
